It brings me great joy to see life pushing through after a long cold winter. About two inches of daffodil sprouts began to emerge in mid February. It was a sign to me that hope was on its’ way. It had been four months of looking at dead trees and grass. I never realized how much I enjoyed the greener seasons. The temperatures were starting to reach into the 50′s and an occasional 60 degree mark. It became evident that nature can’t be held back. Just the slightest bit of encouragement brings out the breath life of mother nature. Here it is March and with the sun and rains, the flowers begin to bloom.
During the 70′s and 80′s, a family by the name of Webb lived here at Mount Vernon. Mrs. Webb was a descendent of Germany. The story goes that she yearned for her home area where she grew up. She planted flowers of all kinds all over the property, that would bloom at different times of the year. Mr. Webb built her flower beds made of river rock and worked to make her feel more at home. After Mrs. Webb passed away, the house was turned over to their daughter who later removed many of the flower beds. Today flowers can be seen growing in the most unusual places in the yard. Each time I see one I thank Mrs. Webb for taking the time to plant them. Because their color and beauty, has taken my breath away.
